What is a food allergy?
In the case of a food allergy , your dog's immune system reacts to certain food components, also known as allergens. The allergens are mistakenly perceived by the body as threatening substances, which is why they are combated by the body's own antibodies. Basically, this is an overreaction of the immune system.
Both the allergens and the reaction to them vary from dog to dog. However, the following symptoms often occur with a food allergy:
- Juckreiz
- Übermäßiges Lecken und Knabbern
- Fell- und Hautprobleme
- Ohrenentzündungen
- Magen-Intestinal complaints such as diarrhea and vomiting
As these signs are very unspecific and can also occur in many other diseases, you should urgently consult a vet to rule them out.
Animal proteins: The main allergens in dogs
Food allergies are caused by repeated contact with the allergenic substance. It can happen that your four-legged friend seems to tolerate his food well over a long period of time and suddenly shows allergic reactions. Basically, almost any food ingredient can trigger an allergy. However, since your dog only reacts sensitively to the allergen after repeated ingestion, it is not surprising that frequently fed foods trigger the allergy.
A study published in 2016 found that the main allergens in dogs are animal proteins. For example, 34% of the dogs tested showed an allergic reaction to beef, 15% to chicken and 14.5% to lamb. Some four-legged friends also reacted to cereals containing gluten such as wheat (13%), as well as to dairy products (17%). A good hypoallergenic dog food should therefore avoid these food ingredients.
When the itching increases: What to do with food allergies?
If your furry friend suffers from a food allergy, there are various solutions. Firstly, you could try an elimination diet. Your four-legged friend is fed a diet with only one source of protein and carbohydrates for six to ten weeks. To rule out allergies, exotic meats such as goat, horse, ostrich, kangaroo or reindeer are mainly used. However, insects are now also a popular source of protein. If the allergy symptoms improve, you can gradually add other food components.
An alternative to the exclusion diet is a hypoallergenic food - i.e. a special dog food for dogs with allergies. However, you should take a look at the ingredients and make sure that the food does not contain the allergenic food component. After all, not every hypoallergenic dog food is suitable for every four-legged friend.
What does hypoallergenic nutrition for dogs mean?
A hypoallergenic diet for dogs means that the food is composed in such a way that it contains as few or no allergens as possible that frequently trigger allergic reactions in dogs. Typically, major allergens such as animal proteins (e.g. beef, chicken, lamb), dairy products and certain grains (such as wheat) are consistently avoided. Instead, alternative, rarely used or purely plant-based protein sources are used, such as peas, lentils, lupins or amaranth. Exotic meats or insect protein can also be used as long as they are new to the respective dog and therefore less allergenic.
A central feature of hypoallergenic dog food is the so-called monoprotein recipe - this means that only a single protein source is used to further minimize the risk of an allergic reaction. In addition, artificial colors, flavors and preservatives as well as gluten and soy are avoided, as these substances can also be potential allergens.
In short: Any dog food that specifically avoids the most common allergens and instead uses well-tolerated, rarely used or plant-based protein sources is considered hypoallergenic - such as the vegan and needs-covering allergy food from

Is hypoallergenic dog food also suitable for puppies?
Hypoallergenic food can also be useful for puppies. However, it is important that this food is specifically tailored to the needs of puppies.
