What are purines?

Purines are organic compounds that occur in every organism. Among other things, they are needed to build DNA. Purines are produced by the body itself. The excess is excreted via the kidneys, mainly in the form of the breakdown product urea in the urine. However, diseases, genetic defects and certain medications can impair the breakdown of purines, which can lead to the accumulation of intermediate products in the urine and the formation of certain urinary stones in the body.

What does low-purine dog food mean?

Low-purine dog food is, as the name suggests, characterized by food with a reduced purine content. In the case of various illnesses, this type of dog diet is very important to keep your pet healthy or alleviate their symptoms. Alternative food for dogs with leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease that is transmitted by the sand fly. Once your dog has been infected, the pathogens remain in the organism for life. It is important that the disease is recognized and treated quickly. If it is not treated, your four-legged friend's kidneys can be permanently damaged.

If leishmaniasis is treated with medication, the breakdown of purines into urea is also interrupted. This in turn increases the risk of urinary stones forming from xanthine, the intermediate product in purine degradation. A low-purine diet can reduce the accumulation of xanthine - and thus the formation of urinary stones.

Dog food to relieve the kidneys

If your furry friend tends to form urinary stones from urea - so-called urate crystals - a low-purine diet can also help. Urinary stones are caused by the accumulation of excessive urea in the urinary tract and subsequent crystal formation with other substances. However, drinking plenty of fluids and a low-purine dog food can reduce the concentration of uric acid.

Low-purine diet for dogs with a genetic defect such as the Dalmatian

Some dog breeds have a genetic defect that causes impaired purine metabolism. This genetic defect often occurs in Dalmatians. They are unable to break down purines - or more precisely the intermediate product uric acid - properly, resulting in increased uric acid levels in the urine. This significantly promotes the formation of urate stones in the urine. A low-purine diet, on the other hand, can significantly reduce the risk of stone formation.

There are currently no official recommendations or limits for low-purine dog food.
