Soy for dogs: what you should know

Soy for dogs: What you should know

Dogs are basically allowed to eat soy as long as they do not suffer from a soy allergy or intolerance. If this is not the case, you still need to be careful about the form in which you feed it. Cooked soybeans and unseasoned soy products such as tofu, soy milk and soy yogurt are usually well tolerated.

Fresh, raw and uncooked soybeans are not suitable as food, however, as they are indigestible for your furry friend and for us humans. Dried soybeans are also not well tolerated. Special care should also be taken with soy sauce. This should never end up in your four-legged friend's bowl, as it is far too salty and can be harmful to your dog's cardiovascular system.

How well tolerated are protein-rich soybeans?

A study published in 2016 identified the main allergens in dogs. In the study, 6% of the four-legged friends showed an allergic reaction to soy. Such a food allergy can be recognized by various symptoms. These include itching, paw licking, skin problems and ear infections. However, gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea, vomiting and flatulence can also indicate an allergy in dogs. If you notice such symptoms in your pet, you should definitely consult a vet.

The role of soy in dog food

We have established that soy has the potential to cause allergic reactions in some dogs. But why is there dog food with soy? Quite simply because soy is much less likely to trigger an allergy or intolerance than animal proteins. It is therefore preferably used in vegan dog food to cover your four-legged friend's protein requirements. What's more, the protein quality of soy is even comparable to that of meat. The soybean is a plant-based source of protein and contains many other important nutrients.

Soy can be a valuable source of protein in dog nutrition, but it is not suitable for every dog. While many four-legged friends tolerate soy well, it can lead to intolerances or allergies in some. If you want to be on the safe side, soy-free dog food is an ideal alternative that still provides all the essential nutrients. VEGDOG therefore deliberately relies on other high-quality plant-based protein sources such as peas, lentils and lupins to ensure an optimal supply.
