It's not just us humans who can suffer from allergies, but also our beloved four-legged friends. Dogs can develop various allergies at any age. However, some breeds are particularly susceptible to allergic reactions as they have a genetic predisposition. In the following, we will tell you which dog breeds have an increased risk of allergies and how you can recognize the first signs of an allergy.

How do allergic reactions develop?

An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to normally harmless substances such as certain food components, pollen or dust. The dog's immune system mistakenly recognizes these substances as a threat and triggers a defensive reaction. This can lead to itching, skin and ear infections and digestive problems.

There are various factors that can promote allergies in dogs. Genetic predisposition plays a major role here. According to studies, allergic parents are more likely to produce allergic offspring. However, it is not yet known exactly how allergies are inherited. In addition to the genetic component, diet, environmental influences and stress can also be risk factors.

The most common allergies in dogs

The most common allergies in dogs include food allergy, atopic dermatitis and flea bite allergy. In the case of food allergy, your dog is allergic to certain ingredients in the food. The main allergens are usually animal proteins (beef 34%, chicken 15%, lamb 14.5%), dairy products (17%) and wheat (13%).

Atopic dermatitis is an environmental allergy. Your furry friend reacts to certain environmental influences such as pollen, house dust mites or mold. These allergens are absorbed either through the respiratory tract or the skin. Flea bite allergies are also more common in dogs. In this case, your four-legged friend is allergic to the fleas' saliva, which is transferred to the dog's body during their blood meal.

Dog breeds that frequently suffer from allergies

Some dog breeds are particularly prone to allergies due to genetic factors. According to a study published in 2021, these are the following breeds:

• Labrador
• Golden Retriever
• Cocker Spaniel
• Bulldogge
• Boxer
• Setter
• Terrier, especially West Highland White Terriers

A study published in 2018 also suggests that many other dog breeds are predisposed to allergies. These include Dalmatians, Shar-Pei, Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso. We will discuss some of these dog breeds in more detail below.

Labradors

Labradors are among the most popular family dogs in Germany. However, these friendly and even-tempered dogs are also susceptible to food and environmental allergies. Typical symptoms include itching, redness and skin rashes. The paws and ears are particularly affected.

Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers and Labradors are not only very similar in appearance and character, but are also equally prone to allergies. The affectionate "Goldies" also frequently show allergic reactions to certain food components and environmental influences.

Cocker Spaniels

Cocker Spaniels are characterized by their gentle and playful nature, but have an increased risk of allergies. They often develop allergic reactions to certain ingredients in their food, which can lead to skin problems, digestive disorders and ear infections.

Dalmatians

Dalmatians are known for their striking appearance and energetic personality. Unfortunately, however, the breed has very sensitive skin, with environmental allergies having an easy time of it. Again, itching, rashes and ear infections are common symptoms.

What can I do if my dog is allergic?

If your dog suffers from allergies, it is important to identify the cause of the reaction. In the case of food allergies, you should avoid the allergenic food ingredients in the future. An elimination diet is suitable for finding out what these are. Alternatively, you can also switch to hypoallergenic dog food.
