Another important point when storing dog food is the best-before date (BBD). After this date, we cannot guarantee the quality of the food, especially with regard to the vitamin content. However, you can compare the food here with your own food. Even after the best-before date has expired, you can simply carry out a freshness check and rely on your senses. If the food looks normal, has a normal consistency and does not smell conspicuous, you can usually feed it to your dog without hesitation.
An often overlooked danger when storing dog food is the infestation of moths and food mites. These pests can settle in the food if it is not stored properly. It is therefore important to store food in airtight containers to keep unwanted visitors out and protect your dog. It should also be mentioned that food mite infestation is only possible after the pack has been opened.
A common misconception is that freezing mite-infested food reduces the risk of allergies. In fact, the mites die, but the mite allergen remains. This means that dogs with a food mite allergy are still at risk. A peanut allergy in humans would be comparable. Frozen peanuts trigger the same symptoms in allergy sufferers as fresh peanuts. In order to prevent problems, you should therefore focus on correct storage as a preventative measure.
